It is its D-shape that sets it apart the most from its competitors. Thanks to it, it is more efficient in the corners while displaying good performance and a very successful navigation system.

Without being the most recent on the market, the Botvac D7 continues to position itself among the best in its price range. Indeed, it manages to combine many qualities: an intuitive and easy-to-use application, precise navigation, very complete laser mapping and good suction performance. Its D-shape remains, next to that, what sets it apart the most from the competition and makes the difference when it comes to suction in the corners.

This compact vacuum cleaner performs well on almost any surface, in addition to being one of the quietest on the market. Its quality / price ratio makes it very interesting, despite the absence of laser telemetry.

Although the lack of laser telemetry puts it in difficulty against the competition, this robotic vacuum cleaner can boast good suction performance on hard floors and effective obstacle management, as long as they are large enough for them. be taken into account by its sensors. Its functions are basic but, in addition to the BoostIQ technology adapting the suction power to the surface detected, it still offers schedule programming and automatic return to the charging station. In addition, it offers five programs and three suction intensities.

Despite a significant price, it is unanimous. Connected, it embeds a complete series of features increasing user comfort, including an automatic drain system on its base.

Thanks to its camera, this model precisely maps each room, which it memorizes for a methodical cleaning of your interior. Hygienic, it incorporates a full tank alert which automatically returns it to its base for emptying, which makes it particularly suitable for people with allergies. The dedicated application allows, in a very simple way, the remote management of the various settings and programming, but also the consultation of the task history and the personalization of the cards. On the other hand, the other side of the coin is that it is noisier, especially when emptying.

Mid-range alternative

iRobot Roomba i3+

With this vacuum cleaner, the automatic emptying station is no longer reserved for high-end models. To keep the price reasonable, the i3 + however does not include the camera, which penalizes its management of obstacles.

CHECK PRICE

This robot vacuum cleaner is the cheaper alternative for those who absolutely want to have automatic emptying. It must be said that this system frees you from any manual intervention for several days, which can frankly convince those allergic to dust. Its navigation is methodical despite the absence of laser telemetry, its correct suction performance (with the exception of long-pile carpets like many others) and its quite honorable autonomy with 75 min on the meter and an automatic recharge. at the base.

Honorable mentions

Blaupunkt Bluebot XEASY (€ 288.25 when published): A reasonably priced alternative. Thanks to its 7.8 cm high, this vacuum cleaner fits easily everywhere. In the absence of a camera or laser telemetry, it displays good technical characteristics: an autonomy of 120 minutes, a 0.5 L tank, four different cleaning programs, a HEPA filter, a smartphone application for remote control and a automatic return to base in case of low battery. This was not enough to supplant our first choice, however, as there was less user feedback.

How to choose your robot vacuum ?

Practical alternative to conventional vacuum cleaners (hand vacuum cleaners, broom vacuum cleaners, but also vacuum cleaners with Where bagless), robot vacuums, launched daily, can greatly facilitate the chore of cleaning.

Thanks to the technological advances of recent years, many models of robot vacuum cleaners now exist on the market, in all price ranges, but among which it is not easy to make an informed choice.

In order to make your job easier, it seemed important to us to distinguish between the three existing navigation systems:

  • The random navigation system : Robot vacuum cleaners without artificial intelligence work with predetermined programs that are supposed to cover the entire room. They often have obstacle detection, but it is purely contextual: they do not memorize their location. It is in reality by this means that the vacuum cleaner changes direction. Because of this, it is likely that the robot will pass through the same place several times before having covered the entire surface of your room.
  • The camera navigation system : A vacuum cleaner with camera uses visual interpretation software to create a 3D map from the image collected. This technology is a serious advance over the wandering of previous models, but it is not without flaws. This interpretation is, of course, imperfect and often requires a certain level of light in the room. Plus, some smaller obstacles literally go under the radar.
  • The navigation system via laser telemetry : Straight imported from construction and military circles, laser technology is by far the most efficient to date. Thanks to a laser mesh of what is in front of it, the vacuum cleaner detects all the reliefs and obstacles. If artificial intelligence follows, it can even save the mapping in its memory and learn the perfect path piece by piece.

Other criteria are then to be considered:

  • Sensors : beyond the navigation system, a good robot vacuum cleaner must above all be equipped with good sensors to manage possible obstacles, but also vacuum. This will protect your furniture from possible collisions and your device from falling down the stairs.
  • Suction efficiency : it is important to check what types of soil it is capable of treating. If the vast majority do well to dust tiles, parquet floors and vinyl, it is not necessarily the same thing on a carpet or a rug. Be careful that some mats with fringes can get tangled in the cleaning brushes, just like the cables of electrical appliances.
  • The tank and the filtration system : the robot vacuum cleaner is a bagless model. It is equipped with a tank to be emptied manually, and whose size is much smaller than other vacuum cleaner models. The manipulation must therefore be easy, since it will have to be repeated frequently. Filtration is important to ensure a low release of dust into the air, especially if you suffer from allergies or if you have pets that are losing their hair.
  • The dimensions : while it is generally advisable to remove all objects likely to obstruct the robot, you must also check that it is able to pass under your furniture or between the legs of your chairs, if you do not do not want to put them in height before each passage. So check the height and diameter of the device before making your purchase.
  • Autonomy and charging : since they work wirelessly, autonomy is important to match the surface area to be cleaned as closely as possible. In the same idea, it is better that the charging time is not too long.

Concerning the features, many options often touted as revolutionary by manufacturers are put forward by them. But which ones are really useful? We have distinguished four:

  • The RTH or Return to Home : in the event of a lack of battery, the vacuum cleaner returns safely to its base and takes care of its recharging itself (unlike models that must be connected manually). This is a rather standard feature today, which can be found on many models. Where it can stand out is if the device is able to resume its cleaning cycle where it left off, so you don’t waste time ironing where it has already vacuumed.
  • The DNE or Do Not Enter : materialized in the form of a physical cord or a programming option (virtual wall), this option prevents your vacuum cleaner from entering a particular area, containing many fragile obstacles or electrical cables, for example.
  • Advance programming : many robot vacuums offer to schedule cleaning cycles at fixed times (when you are not in the house to have free rein, for example).
  • Connectivity : on some robot vacuum cleaners, the options are accessible on the box itself. On others, more recent, manufacturers have chosen to migrate these options to a more practical smartphone application. The downsides can be with the Wi-Fi connection, which can be temperamental or not cover the entire space of the house. Also pay attention to the Android or iOS compatibility of the application.

NB: If you are looking for a robot that integrates both suction and floor washing functions, we invite you to take a look at our dedicated comparison.
