Honorable mentions

Braun CareStyle Compact (€ 178.50 at the time of publication): A standing configuration. This steam generator sets itself apart by its “standing” configuration, designed to save space on the ironing board and in your cabinet. With a pressure of 5 bars, it provides a constant steam of 125 g / min, a Boost mode of 400 g / min. Its 1.3 L tank is fitted with an anti-limescale filter that is easy to replace and guarantees the longevity of your appliance. Without distinguishing itself from a functional point of view, it is an interesting solution for small spaces.

Braun CareStyle 3 IS3044/1WH (230 € at the time of publication): An innovative sole. Braun sets itself apart from the competition by offering an innovative contoured sole. Its rounded and bevelled edges allow it to slide in all directions, without risking snagging buttons, pockets and seams. At the same time, the removable tank with a capacity of 2 L is particularly easy to fill thanks to its large handle. With a pressure of 6 bars and a boost mode at 330 g / min, its performance is nevertheless slightly lower than our Calor SV8030C0.

How to choose your steam generator?

Are we wrong to think that ironing is one of the most hated household chores? But in reality, the real enemy isn’t just that mountain of laundry ogling you, it’s your gear, too. Indeed, with a good steam generator, ironing should not go on forever.

You still have to choose it well. Of course, manufacturers compete in ingenuity to promote their products. But among all that they will highlight, here are the essential criteria to analyze to make the right choice:

  • Steam flow and pressure : for occasional use, the ideal is around 4 bars of pressure and at least 130 g / min of flow. To use it in pressing mode, that is to say to iron clothes vertically, you need at least 6.5 bars of pressure and about 400 g / min of flow.
  • The capacity of the tank : adapt the volume to the number of people in your household. For a single person or a couple, 0.7 L may be sufficient, but for a household from 3 people, we recommend a tank of at least 1.5 L.
  • Filling the tank : some tanks cannot be filled during the journey and require you to take a break (with the risk of not resuming…). Others allow the tank to be opened even if it is hot, for unlimited autonomy. Finally, some are also removable, which facilitates filling. This way, you are less likely to spill water all over the place.
  • Heating time : the question of the heating time is more important than one might think. When you motivate yourself (finally!) To do the ironing and you have to wait too long to get started, that’s a problem. The average is about 2 minutes.
  • Anti-limestone : this is an essential option, but it is not standard. It is therefore not necessarily found on the cheapest models. Without this option, it’s no wonder the device breaks down after a year or two, depending on how hard your water is. In any case, do not hesitate to use demineralized water to extend the life of your iron.
  • The material of the sole : many options exist concerning the material of the sole: ceramic, titanium, stainless steel,… In fact, all have their advantages. Remember only again that aluminum should be avoided, rather reserved for low-end models. They collect limestone and deteriorate very quickly.
  • The anti-drip : Anti-drip is an option that reduces the risk of water spillage. Although this information is not always put forward, you should know that the majority of steam generators have it. But always better to check …
