Honorable mentions
Essentielb ESLC8D5 (€ 399 at the time of publication): An alternative to condensation. Offered at a lower price, this model may be suitable for occasional use or in a second home. Its advantages are its variety of programs, the speed of its cycles (140 minutes) and its Fast 14 ‘cycle, and its configurable timer up to 24 hours. On the other hand, its main fault remains its energy consumption (class B) and we advise you not to put delicate laundry in it.
How to choose your tumble dryer ?
Before embarking on a purchase, it is important to take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the main characteristics of tumble dryers and to determine the selection criteria that are important to you. However, it is not easy to choose a model that meets your needs.
Know first of all that there is three types dryer :
- Vented dryers : these models are the cheapest on the market, but generally the most energy-intensive. As their name suggests, they require an outlet on the facade to the outside: in other words, you must evacuate the water vapor through the window or an air vent by means of a pipe connected to the device.
- Condensing dryers : they collect water vapor in a tank and therefore do not require an evacuation system. They are easier to install but you just have to remember to empty the tank regularly. On the other hand, they remain very energy-consuming because they work with a resistance system heated at high temperature, which also has the effect of damaging the laundry in the long term.
- Heat pump dryers : these latest-generation appliances are fitted with a heat pump which allows less damage to the laundry by drying it at a lower temperature. The difference is that they use the heat from the surrounding air to turn steam into water, which allows them to use half the energy of other types of machines.
Note that there are also devices combining washing and drying, not taken into account here (you can find the best models in our dedicated comparison).
This distinction made, other criteria should be taken into consideration when making your purchase:
- The capacity : tumble dryers sold commercially have a drying capacity generally between 6 and 10 kg. If, for singles, couples or single-parent households with one child, a small model is sufficient, consider buying a larger one for families of three or four people, or even a machine of ten kilos. capacity for large families.
- Performances : on most appliances, a note ranging from A to G is entered indicating the drying performance of the appliance.
- Electricity consumption : tumble dryers are renowned for their high power consumption. However, it should be noted that heat pump devices consume less than exhaust or condensing models, which are cheaper to purchase but more expensive over time.
- Programs and features : a certain variety of programs can be useful to adapt to your laundry and respect its nature (delicate laundry, sheets or sports textiles for example). A quick program for a small amount of clothes can also be useful given the typical length of the drying cycles (2 to 3 hours). And of course, the great classic remains the delayed start, to stick to off-peak hours.
- The noise : This criterion is not very important if the dryer is installed in the basement of a house, but it is essential if you live in an apartment or if you have to run the machine at night. The ideal is, in all cases, not to exceed 70 dB.
