How to choose your washing machine?
The washing machine is one of the most common household appliances. On the other hand, it represents a significant investment, which we want to see last over time.
As the market is very large, it is important to make the right choice. To help you, we have compiled a list of objective criteria for you:
- Device size : depending on where you are going to install your washing machine, its dimensions can be important. There are models at top opening (called “top”), smaller and narrower, and models with front opening, of greater capacity. These can often be installed on top of a tumble dryer or built into a worktop.
- Washing capacity: do you live alone or as a couple? A washing machine with a washing capacity of 5 kg may be sufficient. On the other hand, from 3 or 4 people, it will be better to move towards 7 to 8 kg. As for large families, it is preferable to opt for a model offering a capacity greater than 9 kg. The same if you plan to regularly clean large pieces such as quilts.
- Spinning: the spin speed of the washing machine is decisive in the choice of the appliance. The higher it is, the faster the laundry dries afterwards, whether you use a tumble dryer, or one foldable dryer. For a good spin, count at least on 1200 revolutions / minute.
- Practicality : take a look at the washing machine’s control panel: it must be clear and legible, and the programs easily identifiable. While some prefer that everything be configured in advance, others want to specify the temperature, the intensity of the rinse and / or the spin speed themselves. The main thing is not to have a device that can do a lot of things that you will never use, but rather to buy a model that suits your needs.
- Energy consumption : when an appliance is permanently plugged in, its impact on your overall electricity consumption is significant. It is therefore important to take a look at its energy label (recently updated, as we explain here), on which you will find its ranking from A to G, the latter being the most energy-intensive. It also gives you an estimate of the annual consumption in kW / h, but also of the water consumption in liters for 100 washing cycles.
- The noise : depending on where the machine is located in your home, your tolerance may be greater or lesser with respect to its sound volume. Be careful, however, to distinguish between the noise that the machine makes during washing and that it makes when spinning, because the latter will be much higher but of short duration.
