How to choose your American fridge?

Much larger than a classic refrigerator, the American fridge is appealing and is increasingly making its own place in our kitchens as a real design object. What are its peculiarities?

The so-called “American” fridge is above all characterized by its large storage capacity, varying from 450 to 600 L. It is a priori more intended for families of more than four people. Not built-in, it is a free-standing model that inevitably monopolizes a lot of space in the kitchen. However, with its contemporary design, it is a piece of furniture that we are proud to display.

Its basic energy consumption is higher than a basic fridge model, even if current technology tends to equip it with increasingly intelligent systems. Its characteristic double door is usually equipped with an ice cube, crushed ice and drink dispenser. Its volume is divided into two: refrigeration and freezing. Here are some criteria to be particularly careful:

• The type of refrigerator : a distinction is made between “side by side” (two-door) and “French door” (multi-door) models. In this second case, the refrigerator is in the upper part, with two doors, and the freezer in the lower part, with two doors or in the form of drawer (s).
• Storage capacity : brands display overall net volume in the first line, but it is above all the distribution between refrigeration and freezing that interests us (generally ⅔ - ⅓).
