Mr. Coffee that broke. I was pleasantly surprised by the size, it fits great on my kitchen counter and it looks “fancier” for the price. As a former Starbucks barista I made sure I ran water through a few times before use like it says. Hasn’t tasted like plastic at all! It brews quickly, tastes great, the froth isn’t like the one on my sister and brother and law’s Breville, but my girlfriend was really happy with her latte when I handed it to her! I did by a small 8 oz metal
pitcher, which I would recommend, it makes steaming a lot easier. (There are do’s and don’t’s to frothing so if you really want to do it right, go beyond the machine’s directions and watch a YouTube video, or 3). I also use a thermometer (like I said, former barista!) to check the milk temp as I froth (140-180). I have been making myself peppermint mochas every morning. The machine and ingredients probably cost what it would to order one everyday for a week or less. And, if you’re looking to make your own too 365 chocolate syrup at Whole Foods is great, it’s not overly sweet, like at Starbucks, and then I use peppermint extract and add sugar to taste. Starbucks sells some of syrups, which they don’t readily advertise, and don’t expect to get a pump, but I personally really prefer the peppermint extract! So, long review, to say I’m really happy to have this little machine to make my own drinks and it is a lot of fun!
Update: AMERICAN CONSUMERS BEWARE!!! -- not long after buying this, the LED "on-light" dislodged and fell about an inch down inside the machine, where it was useless as an indicator. I called Bella and they stated I would need to clip the plug (which makes the machine unusable) and return it to them in order to get a warranty refund. (I was told they had no like machines to send at that time.) Guess what .... you must send the plug to CANADA, so it cost $9.50 to mail, the cheapest way. This is on account of the plug thickness that the PO charges so much more than a letter. Then, Bella never sent the refund!!! It was a major waste of time and additiional money fooling with it. Consider this a machine with NO ACTUAL WARRANTY, in spite of what the purchase documentation says.
What I really like about this machine is that it makes a really delicious full cup of strong coffee. I add a bit more than a cup of water (fill the carafe up to the top of the metal band), and two full scoops of espresso grind dark beans, tamped down firmly. It makes a full-sized cup of rich, dark coffee. Much richer than a regular drip pot, more precise and easier to clean the machine than a French press. Normally I don't use the milk steamer, but it does work fine.
I tried treating myself to a more elaborate and expensive espresso machine, tried 3 or 4 models. But I returned them all--none had a big enough coffee container to hold two full scoops, so I just couldn't get as good of a full cup. They may well make good small espresso cups (so does the Bella), but that's not what I was going for.
It's not a perfect machine, and it won't last forever, but it's versatile and affordable and makes a great strong cup!
