Read this best sports watch with GPS and heart rate monitor review to find out the best smart watches available online.

Having a good heart rate monitor for running, swimming or cycling is essential and the growing popularity of smartwatches has not taken away the interest that runners may have in getting a GPS watch for running (or for swimming and cycling) with a heart rate monitor, since normally These devices have very advanced and specific features that we will not find in smart watches.

Questions To Ask Before Buying The Best Sports Watch With GPS and Heart Rate Monitor

Before you buy the best sports watch with GPS and heart rate monitor, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you want a sports watch for running, swimming, cycling, CrossFit, fitness, or just going to the gym? The sport you practice will be decisive in buying a good watch.
  • Do you need a watch with a heart rate monitor, that counts calories, that measures oxygen recovery times, is waterproof? The functionalities are endless. The more you have … the more expensive it will be.
  • Cheap or expensive sports watches? It depends on the budget you have. Many times it is not necessary to go to the most expensive model. There are very good options for value for money.
  • Sports watches for women or men? That is important. You have to take into account the size of the watch to choose well. Many models are usually too large for small wrists.
  • Modern or ancient? Be sure to weigh older sports watches versus more modern options. It is possible that the reduction in its price will compensate you.

Having a heart rate monitor and a GPS on your wrist has never been so easy. We also select the best cheap sports watches, but that maintain a good quality price.

It is also clear that there is no single GPS watch for running (and other sports) that is best for everyone. It will depend on your needs and many times it will be difficult to find the best option. Some will look for the best sports smartwatch, but others will prefer more classic options.

Some are expensive, some are more affordable, most have GPS, and a few have full maps. We will also find a few that monitor heart rate and others that can even be used in swimming, cycling or skiing.

What Should You Look For When Buying The Best Sports Watch?

If you have come this far, it means that you do not need a fitness bracelet, designed for more specific cases such as gym training or even swimming. In the case of sports watches, they will offer us much more: more complete metrics, GPS positioning, more sensors and they will be larger and heavier.

If you are already clear that you want the best sports watch with GPS and heart rate monitor, now it’s time to select the one that best suits your needs and sports practices. How often do you train? A single sport or several? How much do you want to spend? These are questions to ask yourself before making the purchase.

If you go for the cheaper models, they are usually intended for running, athletics, and similar disciplines. As soon as you get into sports watches compatible with various sports, the price starts to go up. There are many dedicated to triathlon, for example, who are able to change sports activity automatically. In this case you should get a multisport GPS watch.

– Battery Life

Since they have so many options, it is very important that they have a good battery life. Some of them are solar charged. The battery drains very quickly when using GPS positioning. Keep that in mind. Normally the more expensive the watch, the better battery life it offers.

– Manufacturing and Design

Manufacturers usually use materials that give a tremendous lightness to the watch (so that it does not bother us on the wrist). In the case of Casio, their watches are also tremendously resistant. They are usually relatively large watches, with screens that are well visible even in bright sunlight and that offer a lot of data on their dials.

– Waterproof

They are usually resistant to water to a greater or lesser extent, something essential if we are going to use them outdoors or even in water. At this point you have to be very careful, and choose the model that will support our sports activity. A light rain on our watch is not the same as swimming 5 km with it. You have to look at its IP classification (a number like IP68 with two numbers) or the ATM (ISO 2281 standard) that indicates:

IP rating
First character IP: solid input resistance Degree of protection against ingress of solids
0 o X Not rated
1 Object diameter ≥50.0mm
2 Object diameter ≥12.5mm
3 Object diameter≥2.5mm
4 Object diameter ≥1.0mm
5 Dust protection
6 Dust tight dust
IP rating
Second IP character: resistance to liquid ingress Degree of protection against ingress of liquids
0 o X Not rated
1 Vertical water fall
2 Water fall with up to 15º inclination
3 Spray with an incline of up to 60 degrees.
4 Splashing water from any direction
5 Low pressure water jets
6 High pressure water jets
7 Temporary immersion in water
8 Continuous immersion in water

On the Casio website they offer us a very explanatory table about the WR (Water Resistance) or ATM:

Water resistance Casio watches
  • Water resistance: Can be used while splashing with water but not under any pressure.
  • 50M Water Resistance (5 ATM): Can be used in lavatories, during swimming, in athletic sports, in shallow water, but not while snorkeling or diving.
  • 100M Water resistance (10 ATM): Can be used in toilets, during swimming, pool diving, snorkeling, but not while jet-skiing or scuba diving.
  • 200M Water resistance: (20 ATM) Can be used in sinks, during swimming, pool diving, snorkeling, jet ski, but not during diving.
  • 200M DIVE WATCH: Can be worn while diving at depths that do not require helium gas.

Finally, and depending on the company that manufactures the watch, they also offer cloud platforms where your data is uploaded through the smartphone app (via bluetooth connection) . Garmin has Garmin Connect, its cross-platform app and its training service. Polar has Polar Flow to plan your workouts based on your data. The same happens with Suunto or Casio.

What Do Sports Watches Usually Measure?

  • In addition to GPS positioning to later reflect our position on maps (inside the watch or in an app), they offer a pedometer to count steps, cadence sensors, altimeter (perfect for trekking or trails), heart rate measurement, VO2 Max measurement ( blood oxygen), sleep monitoring, interval training, recovery time and a long etc. There are more specific models for diving or golf.
  • How do these clocks determine the position? With satellite positioning systems, the most popular being the GPS system, but there are other systems such as Galileo, GLONASS or BeiDou that work just as well. They are able to locate latitude, longitude and altitude and therefore offer us a detailed map of our route with an accuracy of between 1% to 3%. If the GPS watch incorporates an altimeter sensor, better than better for sports such as trekking, mountaineering …
  • GPS watches and maps: An added plus of having a GPS system on your wrist is that we will be able to consult maps of our route, showing us the route followed and even where we are going if our device can follow predefined “tracks”.

Which Brand of Sports Watch Is Better? Garmin vs Fitbit vs Polar vs Suunto

Difficult to choose right? We have a soft spot for Garmin. Over the years they have shown that they make very good sports watches, that they will last you for many years, that they have very good functions and most importantly, they are reasonably priced for what they offer.

Fitbit does not do it bad either, but right now it is owned by Google and that worries us if we take into account the privacy of your data.

With Polar and its Polar M430 you are not going to go wrong if you are going to use it for running, but it is a very specific case. And not with Suunto if you like the design of their models. Then you have more specific options for certain audiences such as Casio, Apple or Xiaomi, but they tend to be models less aimed at athletes although they support many options.

In short, Garmin is one of the most recognized brands in offering excellent sports watches, and specifically with GPS for runners. If you are looking for a few watches with a heart rate monitor and GPS of the brand, in the next post we have selected a few. We especially like the Forerunner 235.
